Ezekiel Dunagan born in Pendleton, SC, 1771

I have pulled out all of my records and I now know that Joseph Dunagan in Surry County, North Carolina is not the same Joseph as Ezekiel’s father. According to George Dunagan, whom I trust more than anyone else, Thomas and Sarah Came to America in the 1730’s, they bought land in Orange County North Carolina in 1748. There is record of Joseph serving on the Grand Jury at Hillsboro in 1763. George said that in “the same year he was known to be in South Carolina looking for a place to settle”. He purchased 150 acres on the Pendleton side of the Saluda River in 1768 and in 1769 he purchased another 150 acres adjoining his land. George said, “This is where he raised his family”. So this must be the birthplace of Ezekiel.

George does make mention of the Dunagan’s in Surry County as being an ‘Uncle John’ (not the same as John, the brother of this Joseph) whose son John Jr  and of David whom was his brother John’s son. All along with Joseph, Joshua, and Thomas served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

I have found records of Joseph in 1790 census in Pendleton South Carolina. Listed in the house was 3 males under 16 and 2 over 16 and 4 females. We know that he did have at least 6 sons and 3 or more daughters but the daughters names are not known. I also have record of Joseph Dunagin  in the U.S. Census Reconstructed Records for Franklin County Georgia, for the residence year of 1790, however household remarks on the record has a date listed for a petition given by the Governor as 11 November 1793. He must have first come into Georgia in 1790 since we find him listed in both census.

But as stated before we have records of land grants given to Joseph and his brother Thomas for land in Georgia, and we find him here in 1793 and 1794.

So now that we have the correct Joseph, we can safely say that Ezekiel was born in Pendleton, South Carolina on the Dunagan land located on the Saluda River.

So sorry for the confusion before.

If your Solomon is the son of Isaac who was the brother to Joseph, then Ezekiel and Solomon would have been first cousins. George believed Joseph to be born in Orange County but we know that the Dunagan’s moved into Surry as well as other areas, so I think it safe to assume that they are all of one family.

DUNAGAN, William "Reed", age 75, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, entered into rest on June 22, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Helen Marie Dunagan; two sons, Mr. & Mrs. Tim (LeAnne) Dunagan of Loganville, GA, Rev. & Mrs. Ted (Rachel) Dunagan of Lawrenceville, GA; four grandchildren, Abigail, Andrew, Anna and Aarin Dunagan; three step-grandchildren, Joshua Anglin, Krista Jarvis and Jared Jarvis; sister & brother-in-law, Jackie & John Maddox of Monroe, GA; a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and other relatives and friends. Reed Dunagan was born on November 3, 1934 in Gwinnett County, Georgia to Grace Roberts Dunagan and John Byron Dunagan. He was a 1952 graduate of the old Grayson High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army and member of the New Hope Baptist Church. Reed and his brother, Jennings, founded the Gwinnett Wholesale Co. in 1951. He loved having breakfast with his friends in the morning, gardening and he loved his many goats. He enjoyed playing checkers and the company of the many friends that came by each day. Reed's greatest joy in life was his grandchildren and family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. The Service Celebrating the Life of Reed Dunagan will be held Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at the New Hope Baptist Church with Rev. Ted Dunagan and Dr. Preston Moore officiating. Interment Gwinnett Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Western Dunagan Family Reunion

Brad here is a picture of some of the Western Dunagans taken in Silver City, New Mexico this summer, 2012. Direct descendants of Stephan Reid Dunagan, son of Ezekiel Dunagan and Margaret "Peggy" Wallace Dunagan.  The white haired gentleman with the mustache is the grandson of Alvin Dungan and Elizabeth (Bessie) Spaw.  My grandmother was Callie Kate Spaw, married to Stephen Wallace Dunagan.  The lady in the middle is Carol Smith she has written a book about life in Animas, N.M. and being rasied there and she has offered to take my sister Maudie to the Dunagan ranch and show us around as soon as the weather cools off some, I can't wait!

Reidsville, NC – Martha Dunagan Ferguson, 96, of Brian Center of Eden, went home to be with her Heavenly Father, Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at Rockingham County Hospice Home.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 22, 2012, at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Clay Spivey officiating. Interment will follow in Greenview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Keith Chapman, Jason Chapman, Donny Childress, Brian Mabe, Brian Loye and Michael McFadden.

Mrs. Ferguson was born in Gainsville, Ga. to the late Hubert O’Neal and Martha Jane Apple Dunagan. She was a retiree of Chase Bag Company with over 30 years service and a member of College Park Baptist Church. She had lived the longest of any of her family members and was known by her grandchildren as Maw Maw or Mo Mo. Martha loved to quote scripture to family and friends, was an avid shopper and enjoyed eating at Reid’s House Restaurant. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Houston Barham, Leonard Barker and Harry Ferguson; daughters, Betty Lou Chapman and Marie Knowles; grandson, Eddie Knowles; brothers, O’Neal and Parks Dunagan; sisters, Edith Barham ,Elsie Dunagan , Mildred Donati and Thelma McCoy.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Terri Childress and husband, Wayne, Cindy Everett and husband, Philip, LuAnne Loye and husband, Gary, Keith Chapman and wife, Susan and Ricky Knowles who gave her so much joy and comfort in her last days; 8 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

John Dempsey Dunagan, age 86 of Gainesville, passed away on Thursday Morning, July 12, 2012 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.

            

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 2:30 pm in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Reverend Drewery Loggins will officiate.  The family will receive friends on Friday, July 13, 2012 from 7 – 9 pm at the funeral home.

            

Mr. Dunagan was born November 30, 1925 in Gainesville, Georgia to the late Andrew Dunagan and Mellie Cochran Dunagan.  He was retired from Gilford Mill as a Textile Mechanic.  Dempsey was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and a member of Murrayville Masonic Lodge. 

            

Mr. Dunagan is survived by his wife of 62 years, Bonnie Dunagan of Gainesville, son, Randall Dunagan of Gainesville, daughter, Elaine Archer of Gainesville, daughters & sons-in-laws, Marilyn & Randy Steadman of Kingsport, Tennessee and Patricia & Ricky Moore of Belton, South Carolina, grandchildren, Jamie & Casey Dyer, Shane Free, John Armour and Leeza Summers, great-grandchildren, Savanna Dyer, Hanna Dyer, Braden Armour, Mason Free and Luke Free.
